Hello, David!

Good to see people keeping up with what is going on on other
mail boards! I've looked over the photos of the Jornada 820
you so kindly posted. At this point, adding RAM to the 820
will be quite different than a new daughtercard for the 720.
The 820 is one monolithic board - all of the processors, RAM,
BIOS ROM, etc. are on one board where the 720 has a separate
board that has the memory and ROM on it.

I've identified the RAM chips as the two chips with the code
"KM416V4104CS-L5" printed on them. These chips are nothing
more than 4Mx16 (4 Million Addresses with 16 bits per address)
EDO DRAM. These particular chips are made by Samsung, but
they have been discontinued. However, this type of memory
is made by many manufacturers. Finding newer chips that are
pin-for-pin compatible shouldn't be too difficult.

Now, I actually would have to do a bit of experimenting to see
if the 820's board could even handle the extra memory. If the
HP engineers did their job correctly, adding memory to the 820
could be as easy as removing the old memory and replacing it
with newer, bigger pieces, or even just piggy-backing new RAM
chips on top of the old ones. However, if the engineers
short-cut the process and left out some signals, then this will
go right out the window.

However, adding some sort of contraption to allow flashing
Linux in a manner similar to what I have in mind for the 720
might be problematic because there is nowhere to physically
attach a CF card/socket to the 820's board. In this case,
you may have to settle for booting WinCE, then launching
Linux from there....
