You are most welcome. I enjoyed hacking the machine.
I have been asked the same question by others.
I have no insider information at all about the
machine; I do
not work for HP or "related" companies. However, the
Jornada820 is "nicely" designed in some sense - the
engineers who designed it kept their creativity in
check,
and used the most straightforward path for most things.
I have told the story before - I actually found the
Jornada
in a garbage bin, without a battery, power supply or
serial
cable. I reused an old wall adapter as a power supply,
bought a battery and rigged some wires by soldering
them on the main board and looking
with an oscilloscope for "serial port" signals.
After this much
trouble, porting the kernel was easy ;-)
Right now I'm waiting for handhelds.org to give us some
space to keep a fork of the kernel, so that we can
develop
some quality patches that we can then merge back
into the
mainline. Among other things, I am slowly building a
ramdisk that is able to install Debian on your CF card.
