actually someone has reported running familiar 0.6.1:

so the problem appears to have surfaced between 2.4.17-rmk5 and
2.4.18-rmk2-hh2.

i've tried running the busybox binary from familiar 0.6.1 on the
skiffcluster, and it seems that it doesn't really hang the kernel, it just
runs in an endless loop. the binary is on the skiffcluster in
~guest/sq5bpf@acid.ch.pw.edu.pl/busybox_familiar0.6.1 in case anyone wants
to see for themselves.

btw where do i find build scripts for familiar?
