I did about the same thing on my 568 - same result, same conclusion.
HOWEVER, after taking the second "deep breath" flashing in bootldr for
jornada ,
my pda turned into a brick.
Since the bootldr image (labeled bootldr.560) came from handelds.org I
am assuming that the there was a problem with bootblaster.
I've made a jtag cable, and somewhere next week a friend of mine (with
better soldering skills) is going to solder it to the jornada for me.
In theory, that sould solve all my flashing problems, and going to get a
working bootldr into the device at some point.
Let me know if anyone's interested in the result or any other experiments.

If bootldr is flashed in and doesn't work, .... then jtag is the only
option to restore. If bootldr works fine, but the kernel/filesystem has
a problem,
bootldr should have the apropriate facilities to flash back wince over a
serial line. Although I just assume this , cause I have never actually
used bootldr.
