Hello Alex,
good news is, you don't much have to worry about bricking.
the bad news is, unless you are very fortunate and have an unusual
720, your roms are *masked* and not flashable. Which means that
its relatively unlikely that you are going to replace the CE bootloader,
without hardware modification.
jca had a few flash modules at HP Labs that he was able to send to
people; there is some indication that more may be available in the
future; but until/unless that happens, what you have now may be your
only real option for booting.
If you were able to flash it somehow, the recommendation would be to
save a copy of your own CE ROMs, before reflash; the ipaq ones were
written for different hardware and most certainly would not work.
/sbin/ifconfig works fine for me. If you are using some other program
(what is 'ipconfig'?) your mileage may vary. ifconfig is *standard* though.
Most (if not all?) pcmcia network cards that are supported by standard
(x86) linux should be supported by armlinux; not all will be built into
your kernel by default, and not all will be available as modules.
You might need to recompile/rebuild to make sure all the modules you need
are available.
I'm using pcnet based ethernet, and lucent prism based wlan cards
with no problem.
