i had the same problem and just went ahead without backupping either
winCE or the bootloader, i gathered some versions of them on the
internet than, check out
http://beni.chris007.de
under the jornada-files are three wince-images and one saved bootloader.
id just take the step, but no garantuee. flashing with the new bootldr,
installing familiar (via serial!!!) and running linux just worked fine then.
