In being Debian based, there is a lot of bloat that accompanies 720degrees.
(APT lists alone take up considerable space.) The main 720degrees base that is
currently available is not optimized for low space, and the majority of
720degrees users does not mind this because of the wide availability of high
capacity flash cards. There is a common aim to have a desktop-like mini-
workstation system in their Jornadas.
However, one of the other members of our team is dedicated to releasing a low-
resource optimized version of 720degrees, and for this reason, you'll really
want to watch 720degrees development. This proposed branch will do exactly what
you are looking for -- and 256 MB is also the "magic number" that the branch has
as a goal. The developer who is behind this is a proponent of using Slackware
style tools and system trimming to ensure a lean installation.
The only reason that this branch has not yet been started is that more testing
needs to be done on the base to make sure it is very very stable before
attempting to optimize. The more users we have that try stuff out and help us
get all the kinks out, the faster that both full and optimized 720degrees
versions can be released. We'd welcome any input you can supply from trying out
the distro and customizing it for your own special needs.
