I use it the same way: to get out on the internet thru the phone:
modprobe irda
modprobe ircomm
modprobe sa100_ir
irattach irda0 -s
If you want to send data from the phone to the J then I would guess that you
need some kind of program that would listen to that data and know what to do
with it.
However if you just want to see that data arrives you can either use
irdadump or cat /dev/ircomm0
