2.4 is different. for 2.6 there is a lookup table that is used for
translating the key. the original code had values for another keyboard -
which produced wrong characters on my jornada (and yours) version - you
can fix these with loadkeys, and 0 for other keys - which caused the keys
to not work - and you can't fix this via loadkeys (and therefore a kernel
patch was needed)
my patch inserts values in the lookup table for the keys that didn't work
on my jornada version.

in 2.4 the code works in a different way, you can fix the misplaced
characters via loadkeys, or under x with my xmodmap for the j720:
