[jornada] X related font problems

I'm having a few problems with font in X on my jornada.

Situation:

-I am running debian sarge, and took X from familiar gpe
distribution. I copied some X libraries, the X -binary, and tslib
related files.
-So, I do not have a XF86Config-4 file in /etc/X11 (and there isn't
one in familiar gpe either).
-I have installed fontconfig, defoma and x-ttfcidfonts, as well as
ttf fonts via debian arm packages.
-Also, everytime I launch X and x applications, I get:
"fontconfig error: "conf.d", line 1: no element found

Goal:

Now, I mainly use japanese on my jornada, so I would like to have
nice looking ttf fonts. However, even after creating an XF86Config
file with the ttf fontpath and "load freetype" in the module section,
ttf fonts don't show up in xfontsel, so, I suppose they don't work.

I know this is not a strictly jornada problem, but I think it comes
from the incomplete installation, from familiar distrib files. Are
there necessary files I left out for the config to work properly?
