I had the same problems. The reason was that the debian stable's
depmod was not working properly: when 'depmod -a' it wouldn't go
recursivelly inside all the subdirs in /lib/modules/`uname -r`.
Therefore as a workarround I had disabled the automated depmod at boot
time and manually updated my modules.dep to include the paths to all
the modules I wanted to load.
But after I had upgraded my OS to Debian unstable then the depmod got
fixed and everything worked as expected.
