[jornada] Sound on 2.4 kernel w/o flashboard

I have just managed to get my jornada up and running using OPIE and the
2.4.19-rmk6-pxa1-hh3-j720-3 kernel from
http://radiolivre.org/darksnow/jornada/kernel/4/vmlinuz-2.4.19-rd.

I would like to get it playing mp3s and if possible video, I installed
mpg321 but just get errors when I try to play things. It says "libao -
OSS cannot set rate to 44100". Any ideas on how to solve this one and
what programs are best to use for mp3 playback or if this level of audio
support even works on 2.4 without a flashboard. I get clicks from OPIE
when I press keys or click the screen which implies sound support is
working. Is there anything other than mpg321 which is suitable for mp3
playback?

Also is there anyway to get OPIE's battery level monitor to use the
information in /proc/jornada/battery, it just seems to claim the battery
state is unknown.
