To be expected on 2.6 without flashboards.

Is the gpe-image a JFFS file system? This is a file system designed for
flash memory boards and it is NOT suited to hard disks (including
compact flash and other devices which pretend to be hard disks).
If so you might be able to get round this one if you mount it on a
desktop machine (mounting JFFS filesystems from image files is kind of
weird, see http://wep-linux.berlios.de/mtddevices.html for more info).
Once mounted copy it to an ext2/3 image mounted via loopback and then
use this image on the jornada.

hpcboot has a gui and was originally written for NetBSD, linexec is
config file based but seems to be more powerful. I've booted 2.4 kernels
using both without any trouble. As far as I know neither will boot 2.6
kernels yet.

Sorry, seems I was wrong on that one according to my jornada manual its
a type 1 slot and microdrives are type 2.
You might be able to use type 1 cf networks cards in your cf slot.
