I did not solve this problem, but I gave this kernel another try
with busybox and a pure serial console. It boots (and hangs), but
there does not seem to be any power management. At least pressing
the "power" key does not have any effect.
I will investigate further.
Any help how to stop the CF "hard disk" to lose its interrupts is
still welcome.

PS: Since software power management seems to be out of range, I am
considering a hardware hack: Maybe it makes sense to open the
case and to introduce a hardware switch for the screen backlight
which will hopefully increase battery lifetime to something that
allows for some mobility ...
