As Christopher Hoover wrote, there seems to be a method to use bootp
instead. An example for how to set up an initrd that way would be
useful.

I don't think so: In order to squeeze an initrd with PCMCIA support
into 2 MB, had to remove even comments from configuration files.
A third MB would allow for a busybox in the initrd and thus make
debugging much easier.
Having a RAM disk of, say, 16 MB would allow for an X11 installation
- which means that you can have a usable shell without the need for
a CF card. (Without X11, you can still have a shell on the serial
line, but carrying along a serial terminal is not what I'd call
"mobility".;-)
