I found this website that details how to get linux up and running on a 720
using hpcboot.exe. It also shows how to get a filesystem to work.....

I would also be willing to help out with this! with the information here
(and elsewhere) I've been able to compile a kernel and get it to boot, but
I can't quite figure out how to proceed any further (ie, load a
filesystem). A HOWTO would be a great thing!
