There's several ARM based desktop machines available, most of them based
on RISCOS the OS of now defunct Acorn Computers, currently developed by
RISCOS Ltd. (www.riscos.com).
The ARMLinux port was available for Acorn systems ages ago.
For hardware try these as starters:
www.castle-technology.co.uk
1100 ukp for 300MHz StrongARM, 134Mb RAM, 30GB HD
www.riscstation.co.uk
www.microdigital.co.uk
this link wouldn't work in netscape for me, konqueror was fine, has (will
have?) a machine that can take both StronARM and XScale chips.
www.millipede.co.uk (not updated recently)
You won't get compatability like you have with an x86 for these machines
(e.g. you can't just walk into Dixons/CompUSA to buy a better
graphics/sound card), but if you do a lot of ARMLinux development, and
don't like toolchains, it might be worth buying one.
Alternatively you can search RISCOS message boards and news groups for
people selling their old Acorn RiscPC's for a few hundred pounds, although
some of these might need upgrading to make them better than the ipaq.
