[iPAQ] Newbie Suggestion re: 'Keyboard Input'

I've noticed a few discussions here about getting input into the iPaq via utils such as xscribble as well as alternate keyboard layouts along the edges of the screen, etc.

I was wondering if the following concept would 'fly'. It depends on whether X can implement translucent windows ala NextStep:

Could you have an overlaying full-screen translucent window with your input characters in a grid, with the 'focus' window 'underneath', so you can see both at once? Once you were familiar with the layout of the grid, you could even make it more & more translucent. Does this sounds feasible?
