Nope. This is the nature of (most) CompactFlash 'memory' cards.

They actually emulate an IDE hard disk, and use the IDE driver part of
Linux. It's RAM, but accessed that way. Don't ask me why, but it is. :)
FWIW, though, once you get the right module installed (IDE thing), you
use it like a hard disk and all. So, you can just mke2fs (or whatever
takes your fancy.) mkdosfs (fat32) is choice for interoperation with
other CF-memory devices...
