Hello Gordon;

The irda stack is horribly broken in 2.4.0. This goes for i86 machines as
well as ARM machines. Currently only SIR mode on ttyS2 works at 115200, 8N1.
You will need to search the kernel mailing list archives to see whom is
currently working on this issue.

You might be able to get parts of the stack to work which do not require
DMA.
