[iPAQ] More problems

Ok, thank you to everyone who helped me with the ssh issue.

I can now connect to my IPAQ using ppp and ssh over the serial cable. I
can ping the IPAQ successfully from my linux box. The IPAQ can ping itself,
but for some reason it cannot ping the linux box.

I was wondering if that might be because of the firewall software on the
linux box--but I'm not sure.

Anyway, I forged ahead to try and set up ip masquerading per the
instructions on handhelds.org. I need to get the little guy connected to
the internet, so I can update, load software and the like. Right now it
doesn't do very much.

Anyway, I'm still pretty new to linux in general, and I don't know much
about the kernal. For example, I don't know how to check which settings the
kernel is compiled with.

However, Linux-Mandrake 8.0 (which I'm using for the linux box)
automatically installed iptables. So I assumed (probably wrongly) that the
kernel could handle them.

I entered the commands listed at handhelds.org for the 2.4 kernel. I didn't
get any errors.

However, when I opened a new xterm window to connect to the IPAQ, the xterm
froze. I didn't even get a command prompt. Just a white square in the upper
left corner of an otherwise non-responsive window.

I also couldn't shutdown the machine. I had to ctrl + alt + F1 to get to a
login prompt. Couldn't log in there either (it also hung), so I resorted to
a three-finger salute.

Does that mean the kernel isn't configured properly?

Is there anything else I should try?

Thanks again,
-Rich-
