[iPAQ] qt depths

hello,
Just a quick question if somebody doesn't mind?

I would like to write an application for my ipaq using only the kernel and
qte library (i.e. no qpe environment) and when i try to run a program
e.g. ./hello -qws

i get...

Can't drive depth 16
Aborted

I got the same thing when using the virtual frame buffer but i could
switch to depth 1 monochrome (not very useful)

what if anything does the qpe packages do to rectify this?
how can i fix this.
