George,
Well I just noticed that in the instructions after I sent the email
and installed the 2.9.0 bootloader and I am reflashing right now. When I
managed to get the bootloader back on I knew I was ok, but was a little
nervous at first :-) Thank you for the information, and I'll let you know
how it works.

Hello Michael;
Take a deep breath. You do not have a paper weight, but it would make a very
pretty one.
I believe that you are using the boot loader 2.9.5 or greater. In that
version, the boot loader gets locked into flash, so that even a buggy kernel
driver can not accidentally overwrite the flash. You need the following
command to unlock the flash:
pflash 0x0 0x0 0
I will update the restore instructions today.
Thank you for testing this new and important safety feature.
Best Regards,
