Hello Michael;

Take a deep breath. You do not have a paper weight, but it would make a very
pretty one.

I believe that you are using the boot loader 2.9.5 or greater. In that
version, the boot loader gets locked into flash, so that even a buggy kernel
driver can not accidentally overwrite the flash. You need the following
command to unlock the flash:

   pflash 0x0 0x0 0

I will update the restore instructions today.
