[iPAQ] rebuild kernel => boot problems

I recompiled linux-2.4.0-test6-rmk5-np2-hh3 using the skiff tools and
now I get the following error about a thousand times when I boot:
    /bin/cp: cannot create special file `/dev/<foo>': <reason bar>

My real aim is to make PPP work. I thought building it into the kernel
would be faster then modiying and reflashing cramfs. If anyone has
gotten PPP working I'd appreciate a quick howto (as would other people,
I'm sure).
