Just wanted to post my resolution to this issue, in case someone else
encounters the same problem...
My suspicion was correct - I needed to get around the pppd issue on the
iPAQ. Since /sbin/pppd was in a non-writable partition, I did a kludgy
thing -- I copied it to a writable partition and was able to chmod u+s it.
Then I modified the /etc/passwd file to now have the ppp account point to
this location. That's all I had to do! I'm sure some linux folks are
rolling their eyes, but I just needed to get past this for now!
Thanks again for the helpful suggestions,
Ellen
