[iPAQ] PPP and IP questions

I have been trying to get a PPP connection established between my laptop
(Red Hat Linux) and my iPAQ which has PocketLinux 1.0 installed. I am
following the instructions from www.handhelds.org PPPHowto. I am unable to
establish the connection... here are the messages that I see:

Serial connection established
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS0
LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Connection terminated.

I have turned debug on and can see that it doesn't get very far...
I've seen this issue discussed in the archives, but never resolved.
I have wondered if I need to use a different IP address when I try to make
the connection. As per the HowTo, I am using a file which looks like:

-detach
noauth
nocrtscts
lock
connect '/usr/sbin/chat -v -t3 ogin--ogin: ppp'
/dev/ttyS0
115200
192.168.1.100:192.168.1.101

My iPAQ does not have the IP address of 192.168.1.101 -- does this matter?
How do I change the IP address? I have tried a few things with ifconfig,
but haven't been very successful.

Thanks for any help,
Ellen
