I have a (recent) 2.4.2 kernel snapshot and encountered the "ide0:ports in
use" error after ejecting and reinserting any ide device. I solved the
problem by substituting the ide-cs from the card services release.
Well, I guess that does not explain anything toward your ethernet problem
though :(
