ugh, my bad. apparently logging in as 'ppp' tries to start pppd but
can't because it can't find the appropriate modules. insmod'ing the
'ppp_generic' and 'ppp_async' modules by hand makes pppd work properly.
I guess I was seeing all the garbage being spit out by pppd failing to
work properly and assuming it *was* working properly...
