[iPAQ] sound problems

I have started playing some sound on my ipaq, and have run into a
couple problems. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen similar
symptoms.

First, playing a mp3 on the ipaq is quite noisy as compared with
playback on my laptop. It sounds like there is a constant level of
white noise along with the decoded audio.

Also, there appears to be a poor connection somewhere in my audio
system. I was walking around town listening to some music, and the
audio cut out suddenly. My mpg123 process was still running. I have
found that turning my headphone plug in its jack causes crackling from
the built-in speaker, and sometimes the audio will start up again for
a few seconds.

Sometimes I get sound now, sometimes I don't. It seems very flaky.

Has anyone seen problems like these? How noisy is playback on other
units?
