I haven't heard much about this problem for a while; I've discovered that
if I ever press the 'power' button, the kernel cursor will appear and
start blinking as a part of the APM management stuff.

Yes, I discovered that over the weekend. Did anyone ever come up with a
fix, other than a reboot?
