sfm uses >file to figure out the association, and if sfm runs file and
comes up empty handed, then you get prompted for the app to use (which then
gets retained in .sfm or >something?)

Tell me about this "file" utility. Where do I get it, where does it need
to be installed? Also, the "magic" file.

thingy?

Use the joypad. Up and down scrolls the file and directories in the
current directory, right moves you down to the currently selected
directory, right moves you back.

Which sfm were you using? This is the GTK version, I think there is
     also a
Tcl/Tk "SFM". I just add command "links" (associations) for each file
     type
to the .sfm file in /root .

One problem is that sfm appears to hang if the file selected has no
     type
association. I think it is trying to prompt for a command to run the
     file
with, but I don't see the prompt.

Has anybody figured out how to set the sfm window size and position
     yet?

I also have been playing around with sfm. I found that the "file"
     utility
must be installed, along with the "magic" list (/etc/magic).

Is there any way to navigate up and down directories? I don't see a
     ".."
available (I was going to hack one in, in desperation, but haven't got
     to
     it yet)

Actually all you need is to do something like this:

          echo ".mp3-->madplay" > ~/.sfm

and restart sfm. All should be well.

(Also note that the keypad is actually the best way to navigate).

Oh yeah. I was having a great time last night, kicked back in my

          recliner,
scrolling around the directories on my iPaq with the joypad. I
     have
          been
wanting a good file manager since October. Thanks again.
