Don't go by mpg123. Other programs don't take 10 seconds to open and initialize
the audio device.
splay (another mp3 player, available under ftp.netwinder.org:/users/n/nico) for
example will start playing after less than 2 seconds.. If you use dd to play an
uncompressed 44.1KHz stereo PCM file you can get audio out even faster. I'm not
sure what mpg123 is doing that takes so much longer. I'm also not sure why
qmpg123 or whatever the graphical front end is called is a statically linked
