I think this happened to me when using a serial cable that didn't have
all of the flow-control wires (despite having set "flow control none"
in the CE setup). Which serial cable are you using?

To see if any PPP packets are happening, try adding 'debug' to the pppd
command-line options, and add the line 'daemon.* /var/log/daemon' to
your /etc/syslog.conf. Then try the connection again---various debugging
information will be written to /var/log/daemon. Come to think of it,
maybe the 'local' pppd option isn't appropriate.

You could try giving PPP some IP addresses that are in your LAN subnet
rather than the generic 192.168.1.0/24; I'm not sure whether this
would help.
