You should just modify the usb cradle to accept serial as well, it is
extremely easy, no solderning necessary. If you order the crimp contacts
you can just chop off the end of a db9 serial cable, crimp the contacts
onto the ends of the bare wires on the chopped off end, use a multimeter
to figure out which wires are which, then stick them into the
corresponding holes in the connector inside the base (found in the
USB-SERIAL HOWTO on handhelds), and plug the connector back in.
