It's probably dust. I'm awaiting my iPaq (supposed to ship from Outpost
maņana; we shall see, we shall see) and as I wait I have been reading
various discussion sites like PDABuzz -- and what I've been reading
about the overall quality of the unit causes me no small end of
trepidation. Apparently there are all-too-common gripes about:
Dust motes under screen
Popping when sound begins/ends
Power switch door is loose and fragile
Jamming stylus even when oriented properly
Apparently Compaq thinks the dust is getting in there because the screen
is not sealed and dust can get under there from the stylus channel.
Their solution is "use a different stylus and keep the channel clogged
with the one we sent you". The popping sounds is a "we dunno", the door
is "that's just the way we designed it so live with it", and the
jamming stylus (which isn't a problem if you follow their advice on
Issue 1 and never take it out!) is another "we dunno".
So, a question to those of you fortunate already to have iPaqs: is this
a case of the malcontents making more noise than the satisfied, or is
the joy of Linux hacking on a neat piece of gear motivating others to
overlook some real deficiencies in the machine?
