[iPAQ] Another success story (and a few questions)

Hello iPAQ hackers,

After finally finding a couple of iPAQs in stock I have successfully
installed Linux onto both of them. First off, let me say a big THANKS
for all the hard work that has gone into making this possible! I am
very impressed with this project and excited that I will now be able
to start contributing.

I was able to perform the installation without ever using a Windows
machine by following the instructions from Peter Monta at

  http://www.handhelds.org/pipermail/ipaq/2000-August/000061.html

Perhaps the essential elements of this mailing could be merged in with
the general instructions? Or at the very least, this message could be
added "as is" to the HowTo's page.

Now that I am up and running, I have a few questions:

1) Most importantly, I want to get some networking going right away. I
assume that I can do PPP over my freshly-hacked serial cable. Can
anyone give me a quick rundown of how to pull this off? Here is
where I am at so far:

        a) The kernel in v0.13 doesn't seem to have ppp support
compiled in unless I missed it. I can recompile this
           myself.

        b) What do I do about the console that is already on
/dev/ttyS0 since booting? I'm rather ignorant here, is
there a way to detach that console so it won't interfere
           with my PPP?

2) Less importantly, what's the exact focus policy for xscribble
passing its input to other windows. If I have only an xterm and
xscribble up I am able to reliably get input to the xterm. But if I
have several windows up at once, I often have difficulty getting
the input to go to the window I want.

3) The sound seems to be at maximum volume and gets noisy during loud
sequences. Does the v0.13 code include a program that would let me
   adjust mixer settings?

I guess that's it to start with. Like I said, I can't wait to start
hacking. I think I'll take a look at the ethernet over USB code that
has been mentioned to see if I can push it along.

Thanks in advance for any help.

-Carl

PS. A trivial note: When I installed Linux onto my second iPAQ I
noticed a cute little sequence of tones that it played after each
successful file transfer. I hadn't noticed this in the docs and I'm
sure it didn't happen with my first install. What could have been
different?
