[iPAQ] Sync problem

I have a HP Ipaq 5550. I have had this pda since 2003 and has had no problem
with it. For some reason, recently, I cannot sync my pda with my pc any
longer. When I set my pda on the cradle, I receive an error message saying
"Device is not recognized". I bought a new sync cable but that did not fix
the problem. I also deleted the old Active sync program (3.7 version) from
computer and tried to re-install but not able to properly install it any
more. I get an error saying "Installation was interrupted" and the
installation not complete. I also tried to install active sync 4.2 but get
the same error. Can you please provide some other remedies to fix this
problem.
