Thanks, I will try that, too.

However, as the procedure you describe takes 4 days, for efficiency
reasons I would still like to know if there are other ways to deal
with this situation (like charging the battery outside the handheld).
I wouldn't even mind having to spend some money on it and/or get my
soldering iron involved. I just need to know what to get/assemble.

So, I'm still keen to hear about any experiences with this.
