Sorry for disturbing you, but even if I followed the instruction given
in on your site (mainly wiki page "RestoringPocketPcNew")
I just purchased 2nd hand an iPaq 3950 configured with the familiar
0.7.2 version and bootldr 2.22.12.
The person that ,sold me the ipaq didn't provide me the dump of the
original root rom partition.
1.I downloaded the image for 3970 located on your site
(http://handhelds.org/download/feeds/wince/h3970/)
- With this image, I tried to flash using CF utilities making both
md5sums & reflash.ctl file (both "unix like LF only). The CF utility
detected the image on the card, I selected it, pushed on the
joypad....and the screen displayed a nice blue "saving file...." .for
hours (I resetted the iPAQ after 2h..... tux came back! oufff!
- With this image again, I put the iPAQ in the craddle and flashed
using the "load root" command. The image downladed perfectly.... the
bootldr has flashed the rom.
When rebooting, I get the red iPAQ splash screen (2.0 reverse white on
the very bottom of the screen) then, the iPAQ beeps, the USB stuff on
my XP box beeps too. The iPAQ screen gets white and the "wait ball"
starts turning arount....and then stops and the iPAQ hangs
indefinitely
2. a pocket PC 2002 upgrade from Compaq site (SP23661)
I removed the 32 first bytes of the .nbf file (as explained in
different forums concerning non booting iPAQ) using xvi32. saving it,
gzipped and transferde to the iPAQ using hyperterminal in Ymodem.
Everythink gets perfectly (transfer, unzip, clearing rom, reflashing).
when rebooting,... just the blank screen and the iPAQ hanged up.
3 a windows mobile 2003 image for ipaq 39xx
I gzipped this and transfered to the iPAQ. When rebooting, I just got
the white screen... nothing else (the charging light off even though
the iPAQ was connected tu USB)
my windows box runs XP Pro SP2; I used hyperterminal 5.1
I kept the log of the hyperterminal sessions....in case of!
After these unsuccessfull tries, I decided to re-install linux to
check if nothing was broken. Fortunately familiar 0.8 has been
sucessfully installed! the iPAQ boots well.... it has not been
bricked! and I'd stll like to restore pocket PC....
what could I try to get further in this process? could you help me?
Thanks in advance for your assistance
Luc
