Hello,

After a period of testing the final release of familiar 0.8 [1] is
available now. Using ipkg to upgrade from 0.7.x and 0.8pre is not
advised, reflashing is the best way to get a working handhelds with
0.8. The feeds are having a bit of a delay, but the feeds on
svc.mobihealth.org should suffice for the moment.The familiar website
will be updated soon after.

Changes since the prereleases:

* suspend problem with h5xxx wlan has been fixed
* autoloading of sound modules has been fixed
* bluez-utils-dbus now actually uses dbus
* ppp-dialin installs the right users and groups
* autoloading of mmc modules has been fixed
* sa1110_rtc modules are autoloaded, fixing time related bugs
* alignment checking is less strict, so bad apps (rxvt, sdl) don't crash

Bugs still present:
  * ide_cs is still broken, this can be solved by installing an older
version of ide_cs.
  * when setting the wrong linuxargs opie refuses to boot
  * SD card detection isn't working 100%
  * the 'bl' command isn't present
  * gpe user need to do chmod a+w /dev/sound/* to use sound as a
non-root user

Check the temporary bugpage [2] for details. Bugs in the basesystem can
be reported to the familiar mailinglist: familiar_at_handhelds.org, GPE
bugs to gpe_at_handhelds.org, Opie bugs to opie_at_handhelds.org. Please
include the handheld model number and imagetype (e.g iPAQ h3870 and
opie-image-h3600) in your bugreports

To avoid confusion on which image to use on what PDA:
h36xx, h37xx, h38xx -> h3600-image
h39xx, h5xxxx -> h3900-image
simpad -> simpad-image
the colli, corgi and poodle images are for the Zaurus breed of PDAs

The bootstrap images holds a base system, only accesible via serial or
ssh, the GPE image holds familiar + GPE and the Opie image holds
familiar + Opie.

The iPAQs h19xx, h22xx and h4xxx and the Dell axim Xy require a 2.6
kernel which isn't officially supported by 0.8 yet. There will be a 2.6
enabled image released soon, but for testing purposes only. And *don't*
use BootBlaster on these handhelds.

The release team would like to thank (in random order)

* The BitBake/OpenEmbedded people
* The OpenZaurus people
* All the people who tested the prereleases

And a very special thanks goes out to George France, for doing the
ungratefull job of fixing handhelds.org after the RAID-controller
failure.

regards,

The Familiar Release Team
