[iPAQ] 3835 BRICK NIGHTMARE - opinions please!

In the beginning...
-----------------------------
I installed Linux (It was rad), but I wanted to restore WindowsCE.
I began the file transfer process with the serial connection.
During the re-flashing of the ROM there was an error.
While I still had a software connection I typed >reboot (stupid me!)
The unit then prompted me with "refreshing display" then "disconnecting display" or something to this effect.
The image of the Linux penguin faded away very slow, then the unit never started up again. I tried all different hard resets to no avail! :-( It's a black screen, and the unit won't recharge either.

HP Help?
---------------
I sent it in the HP to get fixed - I was told on the phone that a re-flashing is $60. So no big deal. The HP guys know what there doing right? Well I get a call from them 2 days later and they want to replace the entire motherboard! AND a battery!?! The battery is new. Just because is wont charge doesn't mean it needs to be replaced!? I don't understand how replacing one dead battery with another is going to make the unit boot.

...Now the motherboard - I've seen pictures of guys who have been able to re-flash the 3800's ROM with a wire harness the the JPL connections on the board. Do you think HP is just trying to make more money?
Does anyone know if you have a ROM failure; will it destroy the battery?
And now that I have a true brick, what do I do? I don't want to spend $240 for HP to put new parts in it when I can buy a new one (like I did before) for $150!

But wait! I heard of Cambridge Research Labs fixing these issues no problem - Anyone know about this?

Now What?
------------------
I am waiting a call from one of HP's lead techs so I can have some questions answered. They still have the ipaq. But if there persistant on the $240! Then I'll attempt to reflash it myself or just toss this brand new 3835 in the trash :-(
I am so mad with myself for trying linux and messing it up. If there's any comments or suggestions please post them!
