Yes, I meant the pda distros didn't have the needed UI tools.
The phone part of the device is very likely to be just a black box for
the PDA part, which the processor just accesses through serial ports as
a regular modem.
By the way, did you see the internal pictures from FCC I sent to the
ipaq list yesterday? (If you're not subscribed to it, you definitely should)
Using them, you could start identifying the chips.
You'll most probably find the chips of the TI Wanda chipset
(http://focus.ti.com/pdfs/vf/wireless/wanda_031403.pdf)

I don't think you will have to hack the core kernel. However, you'll
have to write drivers... that's still a kernel job, but it's true you
may not need to understand how the TI OMAP 1510 processor works...
