On my 3870 I can hold the "joystick" down while rebooting to get the
bootloader to stay in it's serial menu. Then I can connect the iPAQ to
the cradle and access the menu from a PC.

I'm pretty sure that what is meant by space bar is the space bar on a
desktop machine connected to the iPAQ with a serial cable/cradle. You
can achieve this either by doing the reset and quickly inserting it into
the cradle and pressing the space bar (I think this would work), or by
the bent paperclip trick.
