AFAIK the bootloader cannot read ext2 thus you cannot boot a kernel out
of such a filesystem. Technically it should be possible to put the
kernel into a small VFAT partition and have the root-fs as ext2 on an
extra partition. You should be able to boot with this small detour...
Oh, and be sure that your CF device is really a harddrive and not a
flash device - else a rw ext2/3 will kill your flash pretty quickly!
