Have you tried to reset it _while_ connected to AC?
If your battery is dead then the Dallas ds2760 will disconnect your
battery from the system in order to protect it from really full
discharge. It will only reconnect it after a charge and the charger is
controlled by the kernel.
You see the problem?
So the only way to wake it up again is to have AC online and then do
reset and keep AC online until the battery has been fully charged again
(after boot of course).

Try the above process of resetting whil on AC.
This should work without any black magic (i.e. waiting, turning the
device upside down, sending prayers to CRL :)
