Except that the WiFi card wasn't in the slot when it sat overnight.

That's what I ended up doing. I stopped the ipaq-sleep daemon and let
the battery drain *completely*. I even watched the serial terminal quit
and the LCD display fade away. It would have been better if my iPaq had
begun singing "Daisy, Daaaaaiiissy...," but I digress. :-) After it was
fully discharged I put the unit back on AC power and let it recharge
all the way (in one sitting). When it was finished, a message on the
serial console said something about "learning cycle complete," and
everything seems back to normal. Woo-hoo!!
