Everything you did was ok, except that you should not install sa11xx
modules with a pxa kernel, it will not work.

yes this is the right mailins list.

The reset should work, I never heared of someone who was not able to
reset the iPaq, after only updating modules/ipkgs.

If you updated the bootloader it might lead to such a bug, but you
booted after updating the bootloder, didn't you?
(You must reset after updating the bootloader, or otherwise the
oldbootloader is still running)

Pressing the left most and the right most button simultanosely
(callender and menu (?)) and pressing the reset pin will disconnect the
batterie. This might help.
