I don't know these details. But even the current MMC driver has its
limitations. Other filesystems than FAT cannot be used !

Only some ipaq models or maybe some MMC brands - using a kernel hack - can
be formated with something like ext2, ext3 or reiserfs. In all other cases
(like in mine :(((( ), there is an irq problem for write operations that
prevents one from using such filesystems (there are a great number of email
messages about this in the list archive, so I won't get into any details).

So maybe it would be worth trying to fix that ?
