That's an interesting one. In Australia it is legal to reverse-engineer
software for certain purposes and I think "research" is one of them. My
guess is the SD Card would expect Sharp to prosecute. Otherwise they may
well try it themselves, and you'd need a nice pile of money to defend
yourself.

I just don't understand why there is any reason to protect such a design in
this way. It's a consumer item and it's not like it incorporates any IP of
real value. Perhaps the security features are so easy to break that they
have to resort to obscurity, but even if that's the case surely they can
publish enough information without revealing their secrets.

Just a thought, would it be possible and permitted for someone not having
signed the NDA to reverse-engineer the binary Zaurus driver and write an
open-source one based on the reverse-engineering ?
